NICHE: for most beginners in the online business world, this new word is a major concern. If you are in that position, this is for you; in this article you will learn the basics of how to pick a niche in Affiliate Marketing, but most importantly, it will help you discover what is actually the best Niche for you specifically.
for the vast majority of people, picking a niche is the most overwhelming process when starting their quest for online income, mainly due to the following reasons: First, it is a new concept, which it is completely normal to feel apprehension when entering new territory. Next, there is bound to be confusion because of the wide range of possibilities. Then, indecision sets in, making you go around in circles in your head. Add to that the concern of entering highly competitive markets and the fear of failure, to leave you exhausted before you even start.
In reality this should be a very exciting time, but I know what it’s like: give me too much information at once, or too many choices, and I freeze; that is not what you want. Rather, you need to find a practical way to choose the right niche in order to start generating income from home, without getting mentally swamped and worried about competition or defeat. So, in this post I’m going to keep it very simple, just to get you over the hump and on your way to profits as soon as possible.
For starters here’s a simple definition: A niche is an unmistakable portion of a market; in other words, a group of people with common interests. Having said that, here are what I consider the 3 most important considerations when picking a starter niche:
• Choose based on your interests
• Think of a smaller audience
• Resolve to become an expert
Now, let’s see what that looks like in practical terms.
Clear the Fog and Get Going
If you have a strong interest in a topic or activity, something you feel very passionate about, that should be the first niche you target. This can be anything at all: Music, games, a hobby, a sport, etc. For many it might be the wisdom gained through overcoming a great difficulty in life, or even the experience from an occupation, for those who have had the fortune of working on something they really enjoy.
Ideally it should be something you have knowledge of, but, if there is a subject you have a particular desire to learn more about, you can go with it and share with your audience everything you learn as you devote to researching that topic. After all, your niche is nothing more than the group of people looking for what you have to offer. You don’t need to be an expert, but, you’ll definitely want to become one.
To help you identify your most relevant niche choices, brainstorm your ideas based on the following:
• Your best skills
• Your achievements
• Important life lessons you have learned
• Challenges you have overcome
• Subjects you mostly enjoy reading
• Things you like to talk about
• Activities likely to consume a chunk of your time and money

Choosing Your Best Affiliate Niche
I once heard a big CEO saying something like: He who solves the most problems, makes the most money. Although I can’t remember who that was, the statement stuck with me and it applies here. Your aim should be to provide solutions to people looking for them. It doesn’t matter if it is relieving back pain or finding a desired pair of shoes, people search online for what they want, and when you provided, you make money. Therefore, three powerful approaches for choosing your niche are:
• Pick something you feel passionate about
• Use your own experience solving a problem or overcoming a challenge in your life
• Help others offering solutions
While you might be tempted to browse the web trying to discover which are the most profitable niches out there, it is important to understand the best niche for you is one that corresponds to your personal lifestyle and experience, especially in the beginning. The reason is, one of the most rewarding aspects of being in business for yourself is the ability to generate cash doing something you love, which makes your work fun instead of the feeling of being stuck in a boring job.
Therefore, you must choose a niche you find interesting and would enjoy working with. This is especially important when you consider what the bulk of your work will be as an affiliate marketer:
• Writing content for your website
• Communicating ideas
• Offering solutions
• Promoting relevant products or services
• Helping people with their wants, needs and desires
Offering valuable information and teaching others is a very effective way to catch people’s attention. As a blogger you’ll have an audience, you’ll supply the information they seek, and you’ll facilitate the purchase of goods or services which would satisfy their needs, earning a commission in the process.
Some folks get scared of going against the competition, and worry thinking they may need to find an untapped niche in order to bypass the bigger players; this shouldn’t be your case, since in essence a niche is just a group of people with similar interests looking to buy what they want, and any niche can be lucrative due to the fact there are millions around the globe searching for what they need or desire. The ultimate way to beat the competition is to cater to a specific niche market.
What is a Niche Market?
This Wikipedia article (opens in a new tab)
defines a niche market as a small market segment. The essential idea here for the beginner home entrepreneur is to target a smaller audience. This creates an opportunity to specialize on a given subject, satisfying untapped areas of the larger markets. Therefore, another way I like to think of niche markets is as “specialties.”
As you know, the race to win over a potential buyer is intense, yet, competition is good; it means there is demand, and therefore potential for earnings. Manufacturers and retailers take into account demographics, product and price range, in order to target specific segments of the market. Similarly, by choosing a smaller target audience you are able to specialize, present yourself as an authority on the matter, and cater to their needs.
If you think you might struggle for profits targeting only a small segment of the market, consider this: If you were interested in promoting fitness products, going against the larger well established marketers in this area, your site may not even make it to the first page of search engine results, which means no sales even though the demand is great. On the other hand, if you were to specialize on “exercise strategies for men over 50,” not only you would be facing less competition, but you would be sought out by the audience looking for this information, and because you would be satisfying their specific need, you would also have a better chance for sales.
Any Niche Can be Profitable
You can find a lucrative niche in anything you can think of; if it is sports you like, there are collectables, apparel, paraphernalia, etc.; if it’s a hobby, everything needed to be engaged in it is being sold, therefore you can profit from it. Just think, with the millions of individuals looking for stuff on the Internet, in a vast variety of interests and circumstances, any niche can make you money.
For this reason, it is important you don’t get stuck trying to pick the absolute best niche. There is much more to learn about niches and other aspects of your business.

Moreover, affiliate marketing is big business and finding an affiliate program in your area of interest or expertise shouldn’t be a problem either; Amazon is a popular candidate because of the huge range of products available through them, but, there are lots of others which can be easily found via a Google search. If you have a possible niche in mind, try typing for example: pets affiliate programs, and you’ll discover many choices in that area.
What if You Can’t Choose a Niche?
Picking your first niche shouldn’t be scary or difficult. Although it is a necessary decision when starting your affiliate marketing venture, your first choice probably won’t be your last. As you grow as a marketer you could always decide on a different niche later, or even involve yourself in several market sectors. The truth is, choosing your niche is only one piece of the puzzle; there are other important factors to learn in order to establish your business on a strong foundation and successfully create revenue. You should be able to settle for your starting niche in no more than 15-30 minutes, and move on to the next task.
