I have always enjoyed the use of idiomatic expressions and figures of speech; not just including them in my conversations, but, actually finding out where they come from, seeing them in a mental image and how they might apply in a given situation. One such expression which comes to mind frequently, especially in regards to business accomplishment, is this one of “spinning one’s wheels.”
You may know what it means and even use it from time to time, but, unless you have actually been in the predicament of a vehicle stuck in the mud, you haven’t experienced the real sense of this phrase (LOL). In case you’re not familiar with it, we speak of spinning our wheels when we seem to be stuck in one place, unable to move ahead.
The Literal Sense
If you think of any wheeled vehicle attempting to travel over a very slippery surface, like oiled ceramic tiles for example, you should get a fairly clear picture of it spinning its wheels. This is not a very likely scenario, I know, but, in my youth I often found myself traveling on dirt roads with very uneven terrain, which became traps when it rained abundantly. What could potentially happen was that if a wheel got caught in a muddy ditch it would lose traction, and it would just spin over the slippery surface to no avail.
It was always amazing to me how difficult it was to get such wheel unstuck, definitely a dire situation; which brings me to the message of this article: How can you avoid spinning your wheels on the way of building your business?
Do Not Spread Yourself Thin
If you have too much on your agenda you will certainly have a difficult time giving your business what it needs; realize you have a limited supply of time and energy, which means you can’t afford to be all over the place. One thing is to work your online business on the side until it becomes productive enough to cover your financial needs, and a different thing is to consider, or even attempt more than one option at the time. Trying to tackle different endeavors simultaneously simply results in little accomplishment in each, if any at all.
Similarly, quite often aspiring online marketers may find themselves unsure of the business alternatives in front of them, and even moving from one to the next without really giving any of them a fair chance. This is known as the “shiny object trap.” If you, in your efforts to become a successful home entrepreneur, have been trying this and that, hoping to get it right one of these days, STOP, you’re spinning your wheels!
How Committed Are You?
It is practically impossible to succeed in any venture without having a serious commitment. Success requires stability and consistency over a long period of time. You can ask any triumphant person how they got to where they’re at and you’ll find this to be the common thread. I can think back on many things I’ve started since my early twenties, and there are a few I regret not sticking to.
When we look at someone else’s success we have a tendency to think they’re special or very lucky, but, this is rarely the case. You see, it is not a matter of luck; it is a matter of discipline, because there is no commitment without discipline, and there is no progress without commitment.
You must have a plan and stick to it, fighting tooth and nail. If you’re not willing to do this, might as well forget about it.
Your Business Needs You
It is important to focus your attention on what your business needs; this means the tasks directly intended to build it up, cutting back on unrelated activities. Once you establish which are those tasks you need to do on a regular basis, guess what’s next?
Doing them on a regular basis, of course.
Even some activities which may be business related must be put aside if they do not directly contribute to your venture’s progress. For example, are social media, groups and podcasts helping you, or distracting you?
While there’s an amazing amount of info on the web and much of it may be good for its intended audience, the truth is you don’t need to know it all. There was a time when I thought I needed to read everything, grasp everything and apply it to my business; in result I was growing so anxious over the fact I simply didn’t have enough time and energy to stay on top of it all. In addition, I was frustrated because I knew I wasn’t really getting ahead, and I would even get down on myself thinking I did not have what it takes to build a thriving business.
Now, here’s an important tip: Having all the necessary resources to build your very own cash machine in one place is a great advantage, and certainly makes it easier to work like a laser beam on your enterprise, and nothing else. For instance, if you choose Wealthy Affiliate as the support system for your business, the vast amount of tutorials contained within are meant to educate you and equip you for online success, and unless you have exhausted all of these resources, you have no place in any other platform, no matter how wonderful it may be.
It All Start With a Decision
It should be obvious the essence of this article can be summed up in one word: FOCUS; however, we sometimes have a hard time making it happen, even when we know it is what we need to do. This is why I have touched on some of the most common aspects which hinder our ability to effectively center our attention where is needed, but, the one element which can bring it all together is your decision.
When I started with Wealthy Affiliate I was very excited about finding everything I needed in one place, and I resolved to focus on learning how to do business their way.
