Lump sum death payment
The lump-sum death benefit is a benefit in the nature of funeral assistance and compensation that is paid by expanding the scope of the surviving family members when the subscriber or former subscriber dies but there is no surviving family member under the National Pension Act. Regardless of age, disability requirements, etc., the highest priority among the spouses, children, parents, grandchildren, grandparents, siblings, and collateral blood relatives within the 4th degree of descent who are earning a living from the subscriber or former subscriber according to the family relationship register can receive it.

※ Even if you are eligible to receive a lump-sum death benefit, it will not be paid to a ‘person whose whereabouts are unknown’.

※ Scope of survivors under the National Pension Act (Article 73 of the Act)
1. Spouse
2. Children (under 25 years of age or disabled level 2 or higher)
3. Parents (age 62 or older or disability level 2 or higher)
4. Grandchildren (under 19 years of age or disabled level 2 or higher)
5. Grandparents (age 62 or older or disability level 2 or higher)

Expanding eligibility for lump-sum death payment
Previously, a lump sum death benefit was paid only when the national pension ‘subscriber’ died.

As a result, if you die shortly after starting to receive the national pension, you may receive a lower amount than if you died while enrolled.

In order to improve this, the law was revised so that even if a person receiving the national pension, or a ‘recipient’ (= a former subscriber), dies, if the pension amount already received is less than the lump-sum death payment, the difference can be received.

Through the revision of the law, it became possible to be guaranteed the minimum amount of national pension benefits (equivalent to a lump sum death payment) regardless of the time of death.

How to apply for lump sum death benefit
An application for a lump sum death benefit can be made by the beneficiary himself, his legal representative, or his voluntary representative.
You must file a claim within 5 years from the date the right to receive benefits arose. If you do not claim within 5 years, the statute of limitations will expire and you will not be able to receive payment.
