How to check tax arrears – National tax (Hometax), local tax (Witax)
hello. 3 minutes a day, 3 minutes that change your life.
When you are doing year-end tax settlement, there are times when you suddenly think of things that you have not reported before.
Today, we will look at tax delinquency inquiry methods that can be easily done at home, as well as the disadvantages of tax delinquency.
Tax delinquency inquiry
Before tax delinquency inquiries, taxes are largely classified into national taxes and local taxes.
National taxes are taxes collected by the government, such as income tax, corporate tax, and value-added tax.
On the other hand, local taxes are taxes collected by local governments, such as local income tax, resident tax, automobile tax, acquisition tax, and property birds.
Since the tax delinquency inquiry method differs depending on the tax classification of national tax and local tax, you must first check which tax you are looking for and then inquire.
National tax delinquency inquiry
1) Visit the tax office
The most reliable way to check national tax arrears is to visit the tax office.
If you ask an employee at the tax office and say that you have come to inquire about tax arrears, take a numbered ticket, fill out the relevant documents, and submit them to the tax accountant.
If it is difficult to visit, you can also inquire about national tax arrears by phone.
I have previously contacted the tax office to find out if there are any taxes owed.
It is difficult to inquire specifically about arrears because you did not visit in person, but if you simply want to know about arrears, making an inquiry over the phone would be a good way.
2) Home Tax Inquiry
If you access Home Tax and click MY Home Tax, you can view national tax arrears from the menu on the top right.
If you click List Search, you can check the current arrears.
You can also view your records for the past 5 years when you have previously paid taxes and the arrears are extinguished.
If you have arrears, this can also be easily resolved at Hometax.
From 07:00 to 23:00, you can pay your taxes by clicking [Report/Pay] – [Tax Payment] – [National Tax Payment] – [View and Pay Tax Amount] – [Pay] from the HomeTax menu.
Local tax delinquency inquiry
1) Visit city/gun/gu offices
Unlike national taxes, local taxes are under the jurisdiction of local governments, so you can visit the civil affairs office or community service center at Si/Gun/Gu offices, not the tax office.
If you fill out and submit the local tax payment certificate issuance application form, you can inquire at the window for local tax arrears.
2) Witax inquiry
If you click ‘My Witax’ at the top of the Witax site, you can view local tax arrears.
If you have an arrears, you can click ‘Apply’ on the right to pay the arrears by credit card payment, bank transfer or account transfer.
Disadvantages of tax delinquency
So, what are the consequences of paying taxes?
In particular, in the case of college students, since they have a small amount of income from part-time jobs, they often skip reporting their global income tax.
However, if arrears occur, even if it is a small amount, the following disadvantages occur.
1) Penalty tax
If there is tax in arrears due to reasons such as late reporting, under-reporting, or non-reporting, additional tax will be imposed.
It is recommended that you pay immediately if you have confirmed the tax delinquency because the penalty tax increases as much as the period of delinquency.
2) Appropriation of seizure and arrears
If taxes remain unpaid, the government will resort to compulsory measures.
It is a method of seizing land, buildings, vehicles, deposits, etc., and then selling the property to cover it with taxes.
3) Restrictions on Credit Transactions
If there is a tax delinquency, it is classified as a financial debt defaulter.
Therefore, transactions such as new loan extension and credit card issuance in the financial sector may not be possible, which may cause financial inconvenience.
4) Ban on departure
If you are in arrears of over 50 million won, you are prohibited from going abroad.
Issues such as being prohibited from issuing passports will cause inconvenience in life.
We have looked at the methods of checking national and local tax arrears, as well as the disadvantages of arrears.
I hope everyone finishes the year-end settlement and comprehensive income tax report without arrears with sincere payments.
