Myeongdong Cathedral was completed in 1898 and consecrated to the Immaculate Conception on May 29th.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This site was the beginning of Kim Bum-woo’s Myeongryebang.
At first, it was called Jonghyeon Cathedral (Hill of the Bell)
The space under Myeongdong Cathedral gets its name from the year of construction, 1898

If you look down on the city from the cathedral hill, you can see Gyeongbokgung Palace on the left and Changdeokgung Palace on the right.
Namsan Tower can be seen in the back.

Unlike European architecture, it has a central axis from top to bottom.

The entrance door to the cathedral is a relief by Choi Eui-soon

It is divided into three main sections.

The top part is the Mother of God and Jeong Yak-jong.

The middle part is the Foreign Missionary Procession on the left and the Park Happy Nan Procession on the right.

The lower part depicts the Virgin Mary, orphans, and the sick and elderly.

At first, the weight of the gate prevented it from being installed, but after renovation, it was installed after 22 years.

Reflecting on the timing of God’s permission

This is a full body statue of Father Kim Dae-gun.

He is holding the Okjung letter written in Korean, the only one in Korean among the 21 letters he wrote himself.

A stand-in slice depicting a rose window and the birth of Baby Jesus

Below it is a Renaissance painting of the 79th martyr’s robes.

It shows Father Kim Dae-gun and the boy Lee Dae-chul Peter.

The stained glass under the rose window shows Jesus and the 12 apostles

In the painting of the Myeongryebang Assembly, people from all walks of life are gathered together.

The meaning of the empty seat is that we can all be the ones to fill it and complete it.

You can see the figure of Lee Seung-hoon Kim Bum-woo on the wall.

The eight petals of the lily pads are the number 8, the number of resurrection.

The underground cathedral houses parts of six saints and four martyrs
