Personally, I also paid for another app by mistake, but there were so many refund methods that I was confused. However, when I tried it myself, it turned out to be surprisingly easy. The refund process can be performed by accessing the Play Store app or the Google Play site, so it is recommended that you read all of them and choose the method that suits you.

There are 5 ways to get a refund from the Google Play Store:

1. Canceling App Purchases in the Play Store App

First, we will explain how to cancel an app purchase from the Play Store app installed on your smartphone. This is applicable only when the app is installed for a fee, and other methods below must be applied for regular or in-app purchases.

1.1 First, touch and open the Play Store application, then touch your Google account profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen.

2. Canceling a regular payment (subscription) in the Play Store app

After making a regular payment as a subscription within the app, you need to refund in a slightly different way. Here, recurring payment refers to a system in which payments are made automatically every month or every year.

2.1 Enter the Play Store, click your profile picture, and select the [Payment and subscription] menu in the menu window that appears.

※ Precautions when canceling regular payment

1) Even if you delete the app, your regular payment (subscription) will not be canceled. That’s why you must click the cancel subscription button to get a refund.

2) If you cancel your subscription, future recurring payments will not be charged, but previous charges are non-refundable.

※ Precautions for app purchases and regular payment refunds

The refund process according to Google’s policy is only possible once. In other words, it means that it is impossible to refund twice in Google Play, so if you purchase the app again or subscribe, you will not be able to cancel the payment.

3. Canceling in-app purchases on the Google Play site

Thirdly, there is a way to get a refund from the Google Play site. This method is often used to cancel in-app purchases, such as game items. However, this method can be applied not only to in-app purchases but also to cancel regular payments and app purchases, so you can use it in a variety of ways. If you can’t solve it with the first and second methods, please try the method below.

3.1 First, click the link below to access the Google Play site.

※ Google Play Store refund reasons

Purchased by mistake: In case of payment due to mistake, such as touching the wrong one or confusing it with another app
You no longer want a purchase: If you no longer want to use the app or subscription
A friend or family member made a purchase without my consent: A person I know, such as a friend or family member, made a purchase with my Google account without my consent.
I do not know how the purchase or charge was made: if you do not know how the payment was made
Purchased but not received; If you purchased an item but did not receive it
Product is defective or does not work as advertised: If the product purchased from the store is defective or does not match the advertised product.

With this method, almost all refunds are refundable within 48 hours of payment being made, no matter what reason you choose. However, if 48 hours is exceeded, there may be reasons for rejection for each application.

For reference, when selecting a reason for refund, it is more likely that the refund will be processed if the reason is [A friend or family member purchased without my consent].

3.6 If you select the reason for refund, the report a problem window will appear. Here, enter a specific refund reason in the [Problem Description] at the bottom and click the [Submit] button.

3.7 A window will pop up to inform you that your request has been submitted. Now click the [Confirm] button and wait for the payment to be canceled. For reference, the waiting time is up to 48 hours, but I received the approval result in 10 minutes. Refunds seem to be quicker if you cancel right after purchase.

4. Contact the Android app developer

If a refund is refused after applying all three methods described above, you must request a separate refund from the app developer.

4.1 First, after entering the Play Store app, search for the application to cancel payment in the search bar at the top. And when you click on the app, you will see a screen like the one below.

4.2 Then, scroll down the screen and touch the More (down arrow) icon of the [Contact Developer] item.

4.3 Then the contact information of the developer will appear. You can apply for a refund using [website] and [email]. You may request only one of the two, but we recommend that you apply for both, just in case. For reference, applications operated by companies such as Netmarble or Nexon must use the customer center within the application.

※ Basic request form when contacting the app developer

Write the name of the app you want to refund.
App purchase, in-app payment, and regular payment are notified of the applicable payment system.
Explain the reason for the refund and the circumstances in as much detail as possible.
Fill out exactly what you want from a full refund or partial refund.
If you are not a domestic developer, you must translate with a translator at the end.

5. Request a refund by reporting an unauthorized purchase

If it is not an application that I paid for, you can request an unauthorized purchase report within 120 days from the payment date. According to Google’s policy, it is reported as fraud and the refund process is processed. However, be aware that if this method is confirmed as a fraudulent payment, you will not be able to make a payment on Google.

5.1 Touch the link below to access the non-approved purchase report refund site.

5.2 Please fill out and submit the refund request form. If you have multiple payment methods, you must submit a separate form for each payment method.

2) Google Play order history

After moving to the Google Play site explained in the third refund method, click the [Order History] menu. Then, the status of [Refunded] will be changed for the application whose payment cancellation has been completed. For reference, there are some people who are displayed as [Cancelled] instead of [Refunded], which means that the payment amount has not yet been received. However, since it has been canceled, please wait a little longer until it changes to refunded.
