Seoul City’s Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital project is a project that provides essential animal medical care to pets from vulnerable groups, reduces financial burden, improves the health of pets, and strengthens the welfare of vulnerable groups.
It began in 2021 as a pledge project of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon.
Project participating animal hospitals expanded from 40 → 68 → 92
If the guardian pays 10,000 won, up to 400,000 won is supported for animal medical expenses.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said, “In order to alleviate the burden of pet care costs for vulnerable groups who are spending less on pet care by reducing their living expenses, the city of Seoul and autonomous districts have designated ‘Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital’ and provide medical care worth 200,000 to 400,000 won if the owner only pays 10,000 won. “You can receive support,” he explained.
Support items include essential medical care (basic health checkup, required vaccinations, heartworm preventive medication) and optional treatment (treatment of diseases found during basic checkup, neutering surgery). Guardians only need to pay the amount exceeding 5,000 won (maximum 10,000 won) per consultation for essential treatment and 200,000 won for elective treatment. The cost, excluding the guardian’s contribution, is supported by the city of Seoul and autonomous districts, and ‘Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital’ participates through talent donation.
‘Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital’ is an animal hospital designated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and autonomous districts. Starting this year, all autonomous districts in Seoul participated in the project, and the number of animal hospitals in our neighborhood increased to 92 (40 in 2021 and 68 in 2022).
Those eligible for support are basic livelihood security recipients, the next lower class, and single-parent families who raise dogs or cats within the autonomous district having jurisdiction over their address. You can receive treatment by visiting ‘Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital’ with your pet.
When receiving animal medical support, you must bring a recipient certificate, confirmation of the next lower class, or single-parent family certificate (issued within 3 months).
However, dogs must be registered as animals. Unregistered dogs can receive support after animal registration, and can be registered for 10,000 won through the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s built-in animal registration support project.
To date, a total of 1,679 pets from underprivileged families in Seoul have benefited from the Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital project, and this year, support will be expanded to include single-parent families, supporting up to 1,500 pets. Participating hospitals in Our Neighborhood Animal Hospital can be found at the 120 Dasan Call Center or the Seoul Animal Welfare Support Center website (click).
Yoo Young-bong, director of Seoul City’s Blue City Leisure Bureau, said, “We will expand the animal hospital project in our neighborhood to reduce the burden on the vulnerable and support them to enjoy a healthy life with their pets.”
