The “Temple Stay” program, which began in 2002, has been developing with great success. Temple Stay is a program that allows ordinary people, such as Koreans and foreigners, to experience the lives of monks at major temples in Korea, and is gaining attention as a way to understand not only the beauty of Korean Buddhism but also Korean culture more deeply through various experiences. Participants wake up early in the morning and participate in various programs such as reciting Buddhist scriptures, offering food, tea ceremony, meditation, and worship. Through this, they can get closer to nature and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. For participants who find religious activities burdensome, there is also a program where they can stay overnight at a temple and enjoy the natural scenery. Currently, a total of 7 temples in Seoul are conducting English temple stay programs for foreigners. (Bong Eun Sa, Geum Seon Sa, Hwa Gye Sa, International Seon Center, Jingwan Sa, Jo Gye Sa, Myogak Sa) Jo Gye Sa and Bon Gye Sa are temples located in the city center and are easily accessible, so they are visited by a variety of participants throughout the year.
Temple stay programs are divided into experiential, relaxation, and day-type programs. The experiential program is conducted on weekends at almost all temples, and the relaxation program is conducted on weekdays. The day-type program is a program where participants stay at a temple for a short period of 2-3 hours and experience simple activities.
